Herbs: Aloe Vera

Although here in the United States, the majority of people relies on conventional medicine and the medicines produced by the pharmaceutical industry for most types of health conditions, herbal medicines have a proven track record throughout the years. In fact, they continue to be used extensively in many other parts of the world. In fact, four out of five people in the world are reported to use herbs as the main element of their medical treatment and care. 

In this blog post, we will analyze one very popular herb: aloe vera. Aloe vera is a plant related to the cactus and is known by a variety of names, including, aloe africana, aloe arborescens, aloe capensis, aloe ferox, aloe gel, aloe indica, aloe perfoliata, aloe ucriae among others.

Aloe vera produces two substances that are used for medicines. One of these substances is aloe gel, which is found in the inner part of the aloe plant leaf. The other substances comes just under the plant's skin and is known as aloe latex. 

Aloe gel can be taken by mouth and is commonly used for bowel diseases, osteoarthritis, fever, inflammation, stomach ulcers, diabetes, asthma among other uses. Aloe gel can also be used topically as a remedy for burns, sunburns, frostbite, and cold sores among other skin conditions. Meanwhile, aloe latex is commonly used for constipation. 

Some possible side effects of aloe vera include rash, diarrhea, or intestinal cramps.
